How do you use this?
This page can be broken up into two modules. The types module, and the Pokemon module. The types module is at the top consisting of the buttons that represent every type of Pokemon spanning the 8 generations to date and the table immediately following the buttons. When you click one of the buttons, the data related to the type will populate in the table. The Pokemon module is the search bar and the table following.
Each table has a columns representing the direction of a move type's effect, and rows that represent the severity of the move. For instance in the types module, if "fire" is selected, it "takes" "super effective" damage from ground, rock and water type moves. The Pokemon module table is more advanced because while it shares the same "takes" column of the types module, each Pokemon deals different damage depending on the move type. To account for dual type Pokemon, the table breaks the damage the Pokemon deals based on move type.
Understanding move type effectiveness
Type effectiveness calculations depend on the move type and the target Pokemon's type(s).
- Super Effective: double damage
- Ineffective: half damage
- Completely Ineffective: no damage
When considering two types the effects are multiplicative.
- Ultra Effective: quadruple damage
- Super Ineffective: quarter damage
With the exception of "Pokemon Legends: Arceus" all games follow these effectiveness rules. Ultra effectiveness in Arceus does 2.5 times damage, and Super Ineffectiveness does 0.4 times damage.
